Mrs. McGarrigle’s Fine Foods
Meet Janet Campbell
Janet is the innovative founder of Mrs. McGarrigle’s Fine Food Inc, which came to life in 1988. She began her journey by making mustards & preserves in her own kitchen. From that, she moved onto manufacturing condiments in the basement kitchen of Ottawa’s former city jail, circa 1800. Today, Mrs. McGarrigle’s Fine Mustard has won several awards for quality and have morphed into one of Canada’s most successful gourmet mustard producers.
Mrs. McGarrigle’s products are all made by hand in small batches in Merrickville, Ontario, Canada. The ingredients are all natural and the products have no preservatives. Janet does not believe in mass production which is one of the reasons her mustards are so distinctive. Production currently takes place four days a week to yield between 800 and 1000 bottles a day.
Unlike many producers, Mrs. McGarrigle’s uses whole mustard seeds to produce a stronger bite and flavour. “We always start with whole seed…we crush the seed, soak it in different vinegars or alcohol such as whiskey or wine for three hours, then add fresh local ingredients like honey or maple syrup, and then we blend it, and jar and label it by hand,” explains Janet.
Today the company makes 14 mustards, two chutneys, and a tomato relish. Sarafino is very proud to distribute this line of unique, artisanal goods. These fantastic products are all natural and preservative-free, made with fresh local ingredients. No two are alike and there are no others like them.
